history

Archaeological finds show that the densely wooded, inhospitable narrowness of Klaus was at least walked, perhaps even inhabited, by humans as early as the Bronze Age. Due to the landscape, a Roman road, whose course at that time is still visible in some places, later led through the Steyrtal near Klaus.

The town center in 1903

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century . The first (but not fully secured) documentary references to the place Klaus go back to the years 1175 and 1178, after which Udalschalk von Klaus administered Klaus Castle for the Margraves of Styria. In a secured document from 1192, Klaus is named as the princely possession of the Babenbergs.

Historical records from the late Middle Ages also mention the spelling of the place name in common use at that time by naming various burgraves of Klaus: Clusa, Chlausa, Claws, Klausen, Klaus.
