history

Middle Ages and early modern times

The first written mention of the name Schlierbach - as part of the Duchy of Bavaria - took place in Salzburg sources in 927. In the High Middle Ages there was a ministerial family whose family name was the same as the place name. Otokar von Schlierbach (around 1220) was related to the Kapellern , another noble family. After the Peace of Vienna , the Kremstal belonged to the principality ob der Enns, which in turn was part of the Duchy of Austria . In 1353 the bishop of Bamberg (as the owner of Kirchdorf an der Krems ) tried to intervene against the sale of the Schlierbach dominion to the Lords of Walsee , but unsuccessfully. On February 22, 1355 Anna and Eberhard V. von Walsee founded the Schlierbach convent. Around the year 1400, due to the inaction of the state authorities, the spread of the law of the thumb is documented. Supported by the Jörger von Tollet , the teaching of Martin Luther appeared from 1531 . The monastery was administered by administrators from 1556, as it had also turned to the Protestant faith.

17th and 18th centuries

In the course of the brotherly dispute in the Habsburg family , a war people from Passau moved through the Kremstal in 1610, fighting broke out in Klaus an der Pyhrnbahn , Schlierbach was spared. From 1620 the Schlierbacher Konvent was converted into a male monastery, the first abbot was Wolfgang Sommer. Troops never entered the area directly during the Thirty Years' War , but the residents felt the effects of the war in the form of special taxes and rising grain prices. From 1672 the complete new construction of today's Schlierbach Abbey began.

In 1712 the bakery in der Schwärz (Schlierbach 215) was granted baking justice and remained a bakery until the second half of the 20th century . At the beginning of the 1720s, Abbot Christian Stadler had the chapel, which had existed for around 280 years, demolished in the village of Sautern and built the branch church of Heiliger Ubald instead . The pharmacy was sold to Kirchdorf in 1785. The ecclesiastical reforms of Emperor Joseph II forced the demolition of the Calvary Chapel and the Katharinen Church in the village of Hofern, as well as the abandonment of the Prayer Sisters House, which was home to a Third Order .

19th and 20th centuries

The Schusterhäusl (also: Häusl next to the Oedl zu Dorf , Schlierbach 7) housed generations of shoemakers from around 1800 onwards ; it was demolished around 1975 in favor of the Bauer confectionery. In the course of the Napoleonic Wars, it was sacked by Württemberg troops in 1809. The German Revolution of 1848/1849 resulted in the creation of political communities and the abolition of the peasants' subordination to the pen, which means that robots and tithes are no longer applicable . In 1850 Michael Limberger, owner of Ober- and Unterweigerstorf, was sworn in as the first mayor . In the house in the middle field (Schlierbach 18) there was evidence of a small retail trade in the form of a grocery store until 1865 . The post office opened its doors in 1872, and the station on the Pyhrnbahn was opened for almost 10 years . The Schlierbach volunteer fire brigade has been documented since 1896; the first captain was the “Schneider zu Sautern”.

In 1910 the post office, the rectory, the community doctor and Baron Hayden zu Dorff got a telephone connection. In the autumn of 1919, a year after the fall of Austria-Hungary , the Spanish flu was rampant in the village, with numerous deaths. After the fire in Sautern in 1924, the reconstruction of the Ubald Church began that same year. The Heimwehr was under the leadership of Baron Wolfram von Hayden zu Dorff in 1934, and from May 1st the constitution of the corporate state came into force. The National Socialists took over power in 1938 after the annexation of Austria , Schlierbach now belonged to the Upper Danube .

The first American soldiers arrived on May 6, 1945 and hoisted the American flag in Schlierbach , and the state of Upper Austria was re-established.

During the flood of 1954, the river from Micheldorf in Upper Austria via Schlierbach to Kremsmünster was flooded by the Krems. After the old sacred building was torn down, the village of Sautern received today's subsidiary church of Heiliger Ubald from 1959. The ceremonial opening of the new office building and the local square took place in 1979.

The part of the A9 Pyhrnautobahn leading across the municipality has been open to traffic since 1990. In 2000 the new kindergarten was inaugurated.

Schlierbach Abbey : The abbey complex is a major work of the Austrian Baroque around 1700. The renovation in the 17th century (1672 to 1712) by members of the Italian artist family Carlone is interesting in terms of art history:

  • Collegiate Church: 1680–1682, Baroque, with frescoes and lavish stucco
  • Abbey Library: built in 1712; splendid baroque library with gallery, wall paintings and stucco, houses approx. 12,000 volumes

The pen also contains:

  • Schlierbach glass painting workshop: founded in 1884
  • Margret-Bilger-Galerie: exhibition rooms for contemporary art
  • Klosterkäserei Schlierbach: The cheese dairy was founded in 1924. Schlierbacher cheese is produced in the monastery cheese dairy - currently twelve different types. A show dairy is attached to the dairy.

It offers a monastery shop with the sale of cheese specialties, glass accessories from our own production and the like. a., as well as an event center in which various culinary courses are held. The building of the pleasure center offers a wide view over the Kremstal.

There are guided tours in the monastery, in the glass painting workshops and in the cheese dairy.

Culture

  • Theater Schlierbach: Schlierbach has its own theater near the monastery, which is used by many organizations. It belongs to the monastery and is the stage for choir and theater performances of the monastery high school and the home of the Schlierbacher Spielschar. The Schlierbach Spielschar, founded in 1937 by P. Nivard Frey, is managed by Rudolph Meran. Schlierbach has a long tradition of performing works by Johann Nestroy . There is also a youth team.
  • Literary local suppliers: The literary local suppliers are a cultural initiative of the Schlierbach community. They were founded in 1999 at the suggestion of Schlierbachers interested in literature who have been working for this project on a voluntary basis ever since. In 2000, the literary local suppliers received the Upper Austrian Culture Prize for initiative cultural work. The local literary suppliers have been holding readings since 1999. Around eight times a year, writers are invited to Schlierbach to present their works. The selection of the protagonists is based on the personal taste of the organizers, with prominent authors as well as newcomers who have made a name for themselves through publications and awards. The events preferably take place in the Schlierbach theater, accompanied by a wide variety of live music by musicians from the region and with ample opportunity to talk to the artists. The newspaper "Die Literäre Nahversorger" appears to announce each reading: It contains articles on cultural, social and political life, texts with a regional focus, information on the authors, book reviews, etc.

Regular events

  • Rock im Dorf Festival: Well-known music greats and aspiring newcomers present their music to a wide audience at the 'Rock im Dorf' festival in Schlierbach every July. Town twinning

economy

Organic farming is an important line of business in the municipality . The monastery cheese dairy, founded in 1924, arose from this tradition. Since then, various types of cheese have been made, with the original Schlierbacher being made without interruption since 1924. This is also registered in the register of traditional foods . In line with this tradition, the entire community has been participating in the Genuss Region Österreich project called Schlierbacher cheese since 2006 .
