Schlierbach Abbey

The Schlierbach Abbey grammar school is a Catholic private school , which is maintained by the Schlierbach Cistercian Abbey in Schlierbach ( Upper Austria ). The grammar school was founded under Abbot Alois Wiesinger in 1925 as the Herz-Jesu-Kolleg . This general secondary school currently teaches around 500 pupils by 45 teachers.

The high school sees the special task of a Catholic school as creating a living space in which the spirit of freedom and love of the Gospel is alive.

In addition, the Schlierbacher Gymnasium feels connected to the worldwide network of Benedictine schools, not least because of the special tradition and Benedictine pedagogy, which is reflected in the mission statement. The fundamental characteristics of this pedagogy are, among others, prayer, stability, trust, charity and community.

A new feature introduced in the grammar school in 2019 is the "PerLe model". This is an abbreviation for personalized learning and now offers the students the freedom to pursue individual interests. This model is unique in the region.

School history

The years 1925–1938: After the "Herz-Jesu-Kolleg" started with seven boarding students and the exams had to be taken at the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster , Schlierbach was granted public rights in 1932. Abbot Alois Wiesinger also takes on the role of director of the school. The first Matura takes place in the school year 1933/34.

With the invasion of the German troops and the associated annexation of Austria to Hitler's Germany, a temporary head of the school is appointed. However, this dissolves together with the boarding school after school ends. The difficult circumstances did not even allow religious instruction.

During the war, all school rooms were converted and used to accommodate mentally handicapped people, resettlers and refugees.

From 1946, after the end of the Second World War, the chapter decides to reopen the school.

Interdisciplinary electives

As part of a school trial, compulsory lessons were converted into compulsory elective lessons, thus increasing the compulsory elective subjects to ten hours. In the sixth and seventh grades, the pupil chooses a three-hour block each, and in the eighth grade a two-hour block, which, however, cannot be changed from class to class. The special thing about these blocks is that they can also be graduated as "subjects". The sense of purpose lies in an interdisciplinary approach or treatment of topics and areas that overlap.

In addition to these branches, the pupils in the seventh grade still have the option of deciding on an object independently of the blocks (two hours per week).

Human ethics and social studies

This branch deepens the ethical, ideological and social dimension with topical issues. Getting to know political institutions and reflecting on ideological issues are part of the core offer.

6th grade:

Common items:

  • religion
  • history
  • biology

Main topics such as euthanasia, abortion, disability and illness are viewed from three different perspectives. Science, ethical principles and past experiences are juxtaposed. Excursions to homes for the handicapped (such as the Hartheim Institute) and old people's homes, maternity ward offer a necessary practical relevance.

7th grade:

Common items:

  • Latin
  • Geography & Economics
  • History & Political Education

Latin is the starting point for what is offered at this school level. However, the focus is less on translation than on the Roman period itself. Development of democracy, Roman law, philosophical state models and rhetoric create an encroachment on modern democracy and legal means such as labor law and consumer protection.

Practical reference arises through excursions to institutions such as courts, parliament or the Chamber of Labor.

8th grade:

  • philosophy
  • Latin
  • religion

As can be seen from the choice of subjects, the 8th grade is all about the humanities. Maxim such as "happiness" or "poverty" are taken up and examined more closely from a religious point of view, ancient and modern philosophy. How and whether Christian Caritas harmonizes with ancient eros is just as much a topic as a discussion of current issues (educational policy ...).

Computer science and natural sciences

Computer science is taught as a focus, but always in combination with a natural science subject. Above all, the possibilities that EDP offers in the natural sciences should be tested.

Subjects besides computer science :

  • Physics (scientific focus of the 6th grade - 10th grade)
  • Chemistry (scientific focus of the 8th grade - 12th grade)

Art and project workshop

The arc ranges from a musical project to the laws of advertising to reflecting on the quality of cultural expressions, enthusiasm and criticism for cultural expressions are goals.

6th grade:

Common items:

  • German
  • music
  • Exercise & Sport

In keeping with the name of the branch, the task is to the students to put a stage project on the line with the help of the teacher. For this purpose, scripts are written, pieces of music composed and dances rehearsed. This is then presented to the students at the end of the school year.

7th grade:

  • Visual education
  • psychology
  • Geography & Economics

Advertising psychology, the optimal design and cost-effectiveness as a combination should help the students to create their own product or their own "brand". This refers to real projects such as a marketing strategy to increase the popularity of the Schlierbacher Show Dairy with children. The new school logo is also a result of this creatively productive work.

8th grade:

  • German
  • music
  • Visual education

Above all, the critical examination of art in any form becomes a task for the students of this branch. In addition to visiting art galleries and writing reviews, the 8th grade also has its own projects. Last school year, for example, a reading entitled "First Appearance" was organized, which gave young talented writers the opportunity to present their poems and prose texts in front of a larger crowd.

Alternatively: Spanish

As an alternative to the interdisciplinary branches, Spanish can also be chosen as the third living foreign language.

Σigma Schlierbach

"In alumno veritas et sapientia."

  • Intensive and qualitative communication between the student body and the world outside of school through the so-called mentor program and ad hoc inquiries regarding educational paths, fields of interest, professions, summer internships and stays abroad.
