history

middle Ages

In the year 903 the Kirchdorf-Micheldorfer Becken (upper Kremstal ) with the stately center Georgenberg was mentioned for the first time: ... in valle que dicitur oliupespurc ... so: "in the valley which is called Oliupespurc (Olsburg)". At the same time, the church on Georgenberg also had the function of an old parish "Ulsburg", which extended to Spital am Pyhrn .

In the second half of the eleventh century, the Bamberg Monastery received Kirchdorf, Hausmanning, Seebach and parts of Kremsdorf and thus established itself on the important Pyhrn line. In 1083 a branch church of the Ulsburg Church (Georgenberg) was mentioned, which probably had existed as a valley church for some time. It was probably in the interest of the Bishop of Bamberg to build a religious center in his new property. The Georgenberg had belonged to the young Lambach Abbey since the middle of the eleventh century . In 1111 the name Chirchdorf appeared for the first time in a document for the St. Florian Monastery and in 1119 the Bishop of Passau inaugurated the (new) Church of St. Gregory . The name indicates the pastoral importance of the former branch church, which as a valley church had taken over the functional area of the former parish of Ulsburg ("Chirchdorf, qui antea Ulsburg dicitur" = Kirchdorf, which was previously called Ulsburg). Until the 13th century, Chirchdorf was mainly understood to mean the old parish, but at the same time this name was used more and more often for the group of houses around the church. This parish central function in turn required certain market functions and so the Bamberg street market complex (main square) was built south of the old village (Rathausplatz).

In 1283 the place already had market character (forum). The bishop of Bamberg awarded weekly and annual markets to Frankenmarkt, but not Kirchdorf. Fist weaving became very important and in the 16th century the fist weavers made up almost half of the population. In 1437 the bishop of Bamberg granted Kirchdorf the right to seal and seal it and elevated it to a castle keep - a quasi market. Today's city coat of arms (Bamberg lion) goes back to this seal .

Modern times

A period of economic prosperity followed, which manifested itself in the Gothicization of the church (1491), the construction of a town hall and a school. In 1584, Emperor Rudolf II finally approved the weekly market ("to set up a weekly market on Monday and now to hold it forever"). But this document only sanctioned what had been customary since earlier times, namely three annual markets and the weekly market.

From the second half of the 16th century, the scythe smiths in the upper Krems, Steyr and Teichl valleys gained in importance. In 1604, the Kirchdorf-Micheldorfer Scythe Union was founded with its headquarters in Kirchdorf. The now prosperous market tried to break away from the tutelage of Bamberg. First, however, ownership of Kirchdorf (market and surroundings) went to Kremsmünster in 1681 and to Schlierbach in 1684 , before the market could buy itself out in 1795. Kirchdorf was now a free market, but remained in the nominal feudal association with the diocese of Bamberg.

The year 1741 meant the end of viticulture in the Kremstal - almost all vines froze to death. In 1792 the citizens' hospital (donated as a brother house at the beginning of the 16th century) was expanded. Fires plagued the market again and again (1625, 1686, 1769, 1777 and the great fire in 1877). In 1800 the first mayor (Anton Herzog) of the free market was elected and in 1811 the Bamberg suffrage ended. Kirchdorf became a sovereign market and had a permanent post office since 1842. In 1850 Kirchdorf became a political municipality with a mayor, two municipal councils and several committees. From 1868 the market was the seat of the district administration and district court and thus the capital of the new political district of the same name. Since 1918 the place belonged to the federal state of Upper Austria.

Younger time

After the connection of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938 Kirchdorf belonged to the Upper Danube . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place. The parish church of St. Gregor was last expanded in 1962 by the Viennese architect Erich Eisenhofer .

Kirchdorf has been a town since October 27, 1975.

From 1983 to 2007 Kirchdorf was the location of a garrison of the federal army .
