InterCity trains (IC for short, current spelling Intercity ) in Austria are the national regular trains of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) with short travel times between large cities and important tourist locations.

Trains that connect Austria with neighboring countries but do not have a restaurant car are also known as InterCity (short form: IC). Intercity trains operated by Deutsche Bahn , which are tariffed as German domestic trains , also start and end in Salzburg Hbf .

The InterCity train type was introduced in Austria in 1991 with the New Austro-Takt (NAT), which ran every hour on many routes with different trains from Eurocity (EC) to express trains . In addition, the new SuperCity (SC) train type was introduced as a national train with few stops. It was discontinued in 1996; high-quality domestic long-distance trains were referred to as EuroCity until 2011 and ÖBB-InterCity from 2003 to 2013 . Since December 2008, the Railjet has been a new type of train for high-quality long-distance trains in Austria.

Service and comfort

On the Intercity trains, women traveling alone are provided with their own women's compartment and mothers who want to breastfeed their children undisturbed have their own breastfeeding compartment. First class passengers receive a free daily newspaper.

Unlike EuroCity trains, InterCity trains generally do not have a restaurant car. An exception are the train pairs IC 590/593 between Salzburg Hbf and Klagenfurt Hbf (with ÖBB-EuroCity wagons from EC 112/113), IC 718/719 between Graz Hbf and Salzburg Hbf (with DB-EuroCity wagons from EC 216 / 217).

Vehicle material

Locomotive-hauled trains with modernized Eurofima wagons are mainly used. The second class consists of Großraumwagen type Bmpz 70 or Bmpz 73 with extended vestibule for luggage and bicycles and compartment cars type Bmz 61, the first class usually consists of a saloon car with baggage compartment type ADbmpsz 73, longer trains have an extra compartment cars from Type Amz 73. Control cars of the type Bmpz-s 50 are also used on the lines from Graz to Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck . All cars with the exception of the control car are air-conditioned . Up until the end of 2008, multiple units of the ÖBB 4010 series also ran .
