The InterCity (short form: IC) in Denmark is an internationally used type of train .

history

In 1974 the Danske Statsbaner (DSB) started the hourly InterCity service between Copenhagen and Aarhus , which was supplemented by connections to other parts of Jutland . The InterCity trains replaced all Lyntog ( lightning trains ), which were formed from multiple units of the MA series as well as MB and MS in the meantime . These railcars were now used alongside trains with locomotives and passenger coaches on the InterCity routes.

Over the years hourly connections have been extended north to Aalborg and Frederikshavn . With the introduction of the InterCity trains, two additional rail ferries were used on the Great Belt , which, together with the old ferries, handled traffic until 1980/81. Then three new and larger ferries were built, which were called InterCity ferries . This enabled a significant increase in traffic.

In 1990/91 the IC3 diesel multiple units of the MF series went into operation. These replaced the locomotive hauled trains. This made it possible to establish direct connections to different destinations, as the trains from Copenhagen are split on the way and run on different parts of the route. In 1997 the IR4 electric multiple units of the ER series replaced the IC3 trains on the route to Sønderborg , which now operate as InterCityLyn .

Connections 2020

In 2020, InterCity trains will operate on the following routes, but some of them will not operate the entire route:

In addition, the InterCity trains are supplemented by InterCityLyn .

From 2000 to 2017 the InterCity Bornholm operated between Copenhagen and Ystad in Sweden .

Train sets

The InterCity network is operated with multiple units of the types MF , ER and MG :

  • MF (IC3, InterCity) is a three-car diesel multiple unit that went into service in 1990. It has a rubber front nose and specially designed driver's cabs that can be folded away to enable the transition between two connected multiple units. The MF cover the main part of the InterCityLyn traffic and are used for all services.
  • ER (IR4, InterRegional) is an electric multiple unit with four cars. The series is a further development of the MF series. Züger types MF and ER can be used together in a train set. The series was originally built as a regional train, but has also been used as an InterCity to Sønderborg since 1997, as unlike the other destinations, the entire route can be driven electrically here. ER are also used as local trains to Odense, Fredericia and Kolding.
  • MG (IC4, InterCity) is a diesel multiple unit with four cars. It was intended as a replacement for the MF series, but technical problems have meant that it is only used for a few additional departures during rush hour and as a regional train.
