As intercity ferries ( Danish Intercityfærger ) are Danish rail ferry Dronning Ingrid , Prins Joachim and Kronprins Frederik referred that from 1980 to 1997 on the line Korsør - Nyborg in the Great Belt were in use.

General

The Danish State Railways announced in 1978 the construction of three equal rail ferries with a total value of approximately 500 million Danish kroner in order. One ferry was built at Helsingør Skibsværft and two ferries at Nakskov Skibsværft. From 1980 to 1997 they were in use on the Korsør – Nyborg line, which was the most important rail link between the main Danish islands. After this ferry line was closed due to the opening of the railway tunnel under the Great Belt , two ferries were used on the Rostock – Gedser line, one ferry has served as a hospital ship ever since.

Characteristic of the ships in this series is the deckhouse protruding from the bow over the hull . In contrast to the ferries of the Königslinie , they do not have a separate deck for motor vehicles and are equipped with bow and stern doors. There is a control stand at the stern and a bow rudder for reversing. At Prins Joachim and Kronprins Frederik , two bow thrusters were retrofitted.

In Warnemünde, the Prins Joachim and Kronprins Frederik ferries were very popular with surfers because of their strong waves. The reason for this is the design of the hull without a bulge , which was common at the time of construction .
