The InterCity (short form: IC) is an international type of train used in Italy for domestic long-distance traffic. The offer made available by Trenitalia in Italy ranks below the Eurostar Italia , with a top speed of up to 200 km / h. Be used Eurofima wagon , in the first grade and Gran-Comfort-carriage (former TEA -vans). The normal InterCity trains have the train numbers 500 to 749 and have 1st and 2nd class. From 2005 to 2009 there was still InterCity Plus which had modernized wagons, but the modernization of all wagons by 2009 made this type of train obsolete.

The InterCity Notte are night trains that have either seated, couchette and sleeping cars (with train numbers 750 to 799) or only couchette and sleeping cars (with train numbers 1500 to 1999).
