The Intercity (short form: IC) in Belgium is an internationally used type of train .

In Belgium, the NMBS / SNCB operates a dense network of intercity trains, mostly every hour. The Intercity was introduced in Belgium in 1984. In addition to connections within Belgium, there are also cross-border IC trains to France , Luxembourg and the Netherlands . Until 2002 there was also an IC connection from Ostend via Aachen to Cologne , which was replaced by the long-distance trains Thalys and ICE International .

When the InterRegio train type was discontinued on December 14, 2014, the InterRegio lines were divided between the types L and IC, so that the number of IC lines increased from 18 to 36. On this occasion, the previous letters were also replaced by digits, so line IC A, for example, became IC 01.

The quality, average speed and stopping distances of the Belgian IC trains correspond to the Dutch IC trains . Unlike in Germany, no surcharge has to be paid for using the Intercity in Belgium: A trip on the same route in the IC costs no more than in a regional train.

vehicles

When Intercity was introduced in Belgium, the series AM 80 multiple units were its flagship. However, due to the lack of air conditioning , they have now been replaced on many routes by the multiple units of the AM 96 series . In addition, locomotive hauled push- pull trains with I11 cars and two-story M6 cars are used. The locomotives used are primarily series 13 , series 18/19 , series 21 and series 27 machines.

Current line network

The following lines have been used since the timetable change on December 14, 2014: It should be noted that some IC lines do not run on weekends or use a slightly different route.
