The Belgian railways NMBS / SNCB calls the M6 car the double-deck car built between 2002 and 2008 by a consortium of manufacturers Bombardier and Alstom . The M6 cars are primarily used in the Belgian intercity network and are partially approved for speeds of up to 200 km / h, but are currently limited to 170 km / h. There are four variants: M6 A designates first class cars, M6 B second class cars, M6 BD cars with a multi-purpose compartment and M6 BDx the control car .

history

In order to increase the capacity of its lines and at the same time not have to lengthen existing platforms, the NMBS / SNCB decided to place an initial order for 210 M6 cars in the summer of 1999. The official presentation of the first wagon took place on December 14, 2001. The first M6 cars were put into service on November 19, 2002 in repeater trains during rush hour between Brussels and Ostend ; Original plans included a deployment in the summer of 2002, but problems with the car's air conditioning prevented this. From December 15, 2002, the first intercity line was served by M6 cars. In January 2003, two months after commissioning, the M6 cars were temporarily withdrawn from service due to problems with the doors and the couplings ; the affected circuits were then driven with M4 cars .

A class 27 locomotive connected to a control car via + GF + coupling

By 2004, several intercity lines were gradually converted, partly or entirely, to M6 vehicles. Locomotives of the series 20, series 21 and series 27 were used. Initially, there were no control cars , so there had to be a locomotive at each end of the train to avoid the locomotive being moved at the destination station. In 2004 a second order was placed for 70 more M6 cars, 32 of which were control cars. The order volume was 179 million euros. The wagons ordered were able to form push- pull trains with class 13 and 40 locomotives specially converted for this purpose from class 27. The first control car was put into operation on August 20, 2007.

In 2006 and 2007 further orders were placed for M6 cars. Both orders were options from the original 1999 agreement that NMBS / SNCB redeemed. The number of M6 cars produced increased to 492 in the period that followed.

Usually, an M6 set consists of a first class car, a multi-function compartment and several second class cars. Up to 12 M6 cars are coupled together. Such a train has 1572 seats, while a train made up of 12 comparable but one-story I11 cars only has 920 seats.

Since December 15, 2013, some M6 cars have been allowed to travel at speeds of up to 200 km / h. 60 wagons are affected, of which 45 M6 B , 10 M6 A and 5 M6 BD . The cars, which are approved for 200 km / h, run between Eupen and Ostend , between Welkenraedt and Kortrijk and between Brussels and Visé and use the HSL 2 high-speed route . Since there are no control cars approved for 200 km / h, there is a class 18 locomotive at each end of the train . But just three days after the start of operation at 200 km / h, the planned speed was reduced to 170 km / h; the reason given was a loss of comfort for travelers. In the meantime, the problems have been resolved, the cars run in passenger service at 200 km / h.

In December 2015, the Belgian State Railways signed an agreement with Bombardier and Alstom for the delivery of 445 additional double-decker cars of the type M7 , which are based on the M6 cars and should be combinable with them. The first cars are to be delivered in 2018.

technology

The push-pull train control of the M6 cars takes place via the UIC signal cable . The push-pull train-capable M6 cars are equipped for the European Train Control System . The control cars have + GF + couplings. The M6 wagons exceed the Belgian clearance profile , so that adjustments have been or will be made on some routes. For example, when the M6 wagons went into operation, 27 tunnels on the Liège – Aachen railway line were renovated and expanded for 25 million euros.

Increase of the permissible top speed to 200 km / h

A possible maximum speed of 200 km / h was already entered in the specifications when the M6 cars were ordered . Initially, however, it was only approved for 160 km / h. The cars, which are now approved for 200 km / h, have a shorter maintenance interval , and more parts are checked during maintenance than with the remaining M6 cars. On the sides of the faster M6 cars, next to the NMBS / SNCB logo, the number 200 was stuck; this was also done to avoid accidentally lining up 160 km / h cars with 200 km / h trains.

Furnishing

Scheme drawing of the asymmetrical seating and window division

The interior fittings of the M6 cars were based on the comfort level of the I11 cars. Both the first and the second class have 2 + 2 seating, with all the seats arranged opposite one another. The M6 cars are air-conditioned, have electronic passenger information systems inside and outside the train, and closed on- board toilets . The M6 BD wagons have a multi-purpose compartment in the lower deck with 33 folding seats arranged orthogonally to the direction of travel. To ensure barrier-free access, these cars have a third door in the low-floor area in addition to the two doors at the ends of the car. The upper deck of the first series cars originally had first and second class smoking compartments. After a general smoking ban was introduced on Belgian trains on January 1, 2004, it was redesigned as a normal 2nd class area, with the equipment of the first class being retained.

The seating in the M6 cars is asymmetrical. This is a novelty for Belgian rail vehicles. In order to still give every traveler a window seat and not create wall window seats, the window division was also designed asymmetrically.
