As M4 cars are coaches of the NMBS / SNCB called for intra-Belgian transport produced between 1979 and 1982.
history
When they were commissioned, the M4 cars replaced the M1 cars , which were built between 1935 and 1937 and have not been modernized since. In addition, the cars were designed for trains over longer distances in the Belgian network. 547 cars were built within four years; only the M2 cars exceeded this value. Due to the large number of units, the cars could be found all over Belgium.
Between September 1996 and December 2002 the cars were overhauled in Mechelen . The interior was renewed and the color scheme was adapted to the current white-blue-red design of the NMBS / SNCB. Since the commissioning of the I11 cars and the AM 96 series , the M4 cars have mainly been used in repeater trains during rush hour .
In 2020, media reported that the NMBS / SNCB would like to decommission and sell all trains that are still available by 2023, but that they are contaminated with asbestos.
technology
The maximum permissible speed of the cars is 160 km / h compared to 140 km / h of the previous series M1 and M2. The type Y 32 bogies are identical to those in French Corail wagons and were previously tested in converted M2 wagons. Ten type M4 ADx control cars have been approved for the French network, ten type M4 B cars have a built-in kitchen.
