The M7 car is a series of double-decker cars from NMBS / SNCB , which are manufactured by a consortium of Bombardier Transportation and Alstom and are to be delivered from September 2018. The M7 cars are based on the M6 cars , but some will have powered control cars.

history

On December 18, 2014, the Belgian State Railways, Bombardier and Alstom announced the conclusion of a framework agreement for the delivery of up to 1,362 double-decker cars of a new generation of vehicles. The order volume was put at 3.3 billion euros, of which 2.1 billion euros were accounted for by Bombardier's suppliers and 1.2 billion euros by Alstom. At the same time, a first order for the delivery of 445 double-deck cars from this framework contract was fulfilled. For this delivery, Bombardier receives 787 million euros and Alstom 471 million euros. Delivery of the 445 cars is scheduled to begin in September 2018 and be completed in 2021. 65 cars from this delivery are said to be powered control cars, which will be manufactured at the Alstom plant in Valenciennes . The remaining cars are to be produced in the former BN factory in Bruges , which is now owned by Bombardier . It is planned to use the M7 cars in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg .

The procurement is part of the SNCB strategy to reduce the number of series from 14 to 8 by 2023.

Technology and equipment

Four variants of the M7 wagons are planned, which are marked with different generic letters:

  • AB denotes mixed-class intermediate cars, first and second class.
  • B denotes the middle car, second class.
  • BDx refers to non-powered control cars with a multi-purpose compartment and adaptation for people with disabilities .
  • Bmx refers to powered control cars.

The powered control cars of the type Bmx can run with 3 kV direct current available on conventional lines in Belgium as well as with the alternating current used on high-speed lines at 25 kV and 50 Hz. As a train control system is ETCS Level 2 used that is contributed by Alstom. The trains are also to receive TBL1 + .

The operating concept of the M7 cars provides for a pure train formation from a variable number of M7 intermediate cars and one or two powered control cars as well as use as a push-pull train with conventional locomotives. Downward compatibility with the M6 cars manufactured by the same consortium should be guaranteed.

The interior design is to be redeveloped on the basis of passenger surveys and deviate from the version used in the M6 cars.
