The station Leuven ( Dutch station Leuven ) is a train station of the NMBS / SNCB in Leuven . It is on line 36 between Liège and Brussels . With 27,000 travelers per day, the Löwen station is the fifth most frequented train station in Belgium . The station has 13 tracks and is also the terminus of lines S 2, S 9 and S 20 of the Brussels S-Bahn .
history
Leuven was one of the first Belgian cities to be connected to the railway network in 1837. The connection to Mechelen was established on September 10, 1837 and the connection to Tienen on September 22, 1837 . The new means of transport brought the previously flourishing passenger shipping on the canal between Leuven and Mechelen to a standstill and ensured the emergence of a new district near the train station.
The current station building was built in 1875 by the architect H. Fouquet in an eclectic style. The floor plan is symmetrical with a spacious entrance building and two side wings. While the exterior of the station has been well preserved, numerous modernization works have been carried out inside.
In August 1998, work began to integrate the station into the HSL 2 high-speed line . In the future, high-speed trains were to pass through the station at 160 km / h without stopping.
renovation
Extensive renovation of the station began in autumn 2000. In the years that followed, the station square was redesigned, a new bus station was built and a monumental roofing of the tracks, consisting of sixteen white arches, was built.
