Braine-l'Alleud ( Walloon Brinne-l'-Alou , Dutch Eigenbrakel ) is a municipality in the French-speaking province of Walloon Brabant in Belgium . It consists of the three districts : Braine-l'Alleud , Lillois-Witterzée and Ophain-Bois-Seigneur-Isaac .
Braine and Brakel are old names for the grove , which rises in Lillois-Witterzée and flows into the Charleroi-Brussels Canal near Clabecq .
history
The area of Braine-l'Alleud was already settled in prehistoric times. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century.
The Battle of Waterloo took place partly in the area of Braine-l'Alleud. The Stefanskirche ( Eglise St-Etienne ) then served as a field hospital. The famous Lion Mound is also located in Braine-l'Alleud.
1982 Braine-l'Alleud winner was the European price for the dissemination of European unification.
Town twinning
Braine-l'Alleud has partnered with five cities . The oldest with Ouistreham in France has existed since 1954. In 1978 the partnerships with Menden in Germany and Basingstoke and Deane in Great Britain were added, in 1985 the partnership with Drummondville in Canada and in 2005 the partnership with Šlapanice in the Czech Republic .
