Chaumont-Gistoux ( Walloon Tchåmont-Djistou ) is a municipality in the French-speaking province of Walloon Brabant in Belgium . It consists of the five districts : Bonlez , Corroy-le-Grand , Dion-Valmont , Longueville and Chaumont-Gistoux , which were independent until the territorial reform of 1977.

history

Bonlez

The name Bonlez is derived from “bonum latus” (good Walloon). Originally the village was divided into two fiefdoms, Haut-Bonlez and Bas-Bonlez. In the 17th century. The fief-Bas Bonlez became the Barony collected and received a high , a medium and a lower jurisdiction . It set up a feudal court.

Chaumont-Gistoux

The name Chaumont is derived from the Latin "calvus mons" (warm mountain), Gistoux comes from "gesteau" (sandy hill).

The place was mentioned in a document from 1019-1030, which confirms its settlement since the Neolithic . After Chaumont belonged to the Abbey of Gand in the seventh century, it was a feudal lordship of the Prince-Bishop of Liège from the 11th century . Since it was a "terre franche" free land, the landlord had all jurisdiction.

Corroy-le-Grand

Corroy-le-Grand was called “Coratum magnum” in 1441 and “Conroye Chastre-le-Bolle densely le Grand” in 1573.

In 1152 the place belonged to the chapter of Saint Peter in Liège . In 1815, on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo , a skirmish broke out between the troops of Lieutenant Colonel Ledebur, commander of the Prussian rearguard, and the French cavalry von Exelmans from the Army Corps of Grouchy , which were retreating towards Wavre .

Dion-Valmont

Dion-Valmont was formed from the two places Dion-le-Mont and Dion-le-Val . The name derives from the Celtic word "devona" (divine, divine river).

Dion-le-Mont is mentioned as early as 987 on the occasion of a donation of goods to the Abbey of Gembloux , which maintained the village until 1623. Dion-le-Val first came into the possession of the Counts and Margraves de Dion in 1210 as a fiefdom of Duke Henry I of Brabant and Lower Lorraine . One of the descendants of the family was the Marquis Albert-Jules de Dion (1853-1946).

On the evening before the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, 30,000 men from General von Bülow's army camped at “Tout Vent” on the “Terre de Justice” (Earth of Justice), where the gallows once stood, and devastated the village.

Longueville

The place name is derived from "longua villa" , which means something like an elongated village. According to tradition, the place has an ancient origin. There was an important traffic junction here. And even today the paths to Wavre via Grez-Doiceau , to Löwen via Piétrebais, to Jodoigne via Roux-Miroir, to Sart-Risbart and to Chaumont still go from here .

politics

The Chaumont-Gistoux Council ( Conseil Communal ) has 20 members; from it the college with the mayor and four aldermen ( Echevins ) is formed.

Museums

In Longueville there is a watchmaking museum that provides information on four centuries of watchmaking in Europe, exhibits rare pendulum clocks and artistic creations and has a precision engineering studio.

In Chaumont there is a war museum, which deals with the regional history of the Second World War by showing plans and photos of the Koningshooikt-Wavre position ( ligne KW ) and exhibiting uniforms and military equipment.

education

There are five schools in Chaumont-Gistoux: in Bonlez, Chaumont, Corroy-le-Grand, Dion-Valmont and Gistoux.
