List of train stations in Belgium |
The Brussels-Luxembourg train station ( French Gare de Bruxelles-Luxembourg , Dutch station Brussel-Luxemburg ) is a Brussels train station in Belgium . The station is not, as the name suggests, in the city of Brussels , but in the nearby municipality of Ixelles / Elsene within the bilingual Brussels-Capital region .
history
The station, built according to plans by the architect Gustave Saintenoy , was opened on August 24, 1854 under the name Brussel-Leopoldswijk (nld.) And Quartier-Léopold (French). The former name comes from the former Belgian King Leopold I.
modification
By January 14, 2009, the entire station was completely rebuilt. The station and the surrounding area were permanently changed by the construction of the European Parliament . The station was relocated below the Europaviertel so that the trains can get to the station through a tunnel. Only the old station building on Luxembourg-Boulevard still reminds of the old station. This building was rebuilt in 2016 and visitors will find “Station Europe”, the welcome center of the European Parliament. Interactive activities such as the “Augmented Reality” model of the campus provide information about Parliament, its buildings, its history and the personalities who have already visited.
traffic
The Trône / Troon metro station is around 500 meters away, and you can change to lines 2 and 6. Ten bus lines also stop at the station itself, two of which have their terminus there. InterCity trains and the Brussels S-Bahn stop at the six tracks .
