List of train stations in Belgium |
The Brussels Central Station ( French Gare de Bruxelles-Central , Dutch Station Brussel-Centraal ) is the central underground train station of the city of Brussels in Belgium . With around 75,000 passengers boarding it every day, it is the busiest train station in Belgium. Only the high-speed trains pass through and only stop at Brussels South and Brussels North stations ( ICE only ).
location
The station is located in the east of the city center on the underground north-south connecting line that connects the north and south stations . The six-track railway line is accessed by three island platforms .
The station building is located between Boulevard de l'Impératrice / Keizerinlaan , Rue de l'Infante Isabelle / Infante Isabellastraat , Kantersteen and Rue de la Putterie / Putterij . As the terrain rises to the east, the west entrance to the station hall is at ground level, while coming from the east side you have to go down a staircase. The tracks are located two floors below the station concourse. A wide staircase leads from the station concourse to the first basement, where small shops and waiting rooms are arranged. From there stairs lead to the three platforms.
Connected to the train station is the Gare Centrale / Centraal Station of the Brussels Metro , which is located under the Marché au bois / Houtmarkt and is served by lines 1 and 5.
history
In 1901 it was decided to connect the north and south stations. Work on the railway began in 1911 but was soon interrupted. Work was only resumed after the Second World War . The plans for the station come from Victor Horta , who died in 1947. The construction work was completed by Maxime Brunfaut; The opening took place on October 4, 1952 by King Baudouin I .
The station was renovated between 2005 and early 2009.
On April 12, 2006, Polish youths stabbed 17-year-old Joe Van Holsbeeck in the train station in an internationally sensational robbery.
On June 20, 2017, security forces thwarted an explosives attack in the train station by shooting the bomber.
