During the attempted attack in Brussels on June 20, 2017 , a 36-year-old Moroccan who lived in the problem area of Molenbeek in Brussels attempted to carry out an attack in Brussels Central Station with a bomb. He set off a small explosion with a suitcase bomb filled with nails and gas bottles that did not hurt anyone. Then he ran with the words "Allahu akbar" (Arabic for "God is great") at a Belgian soldier who stopped him with several shots. The suspect died of his gunshot wounds.

Apart from the suspect, there were no other dead or injured. The Belgian public prosecutor classified the attempted attack as a "terrorist attack".

Perpetrator

Oussama Zariouh (born January 12, 1981 in Nador , Morocco ) studied at Mohamed I University in Oujda and graduated there in 2002. In 2002 he emigrated to Belgium. He initially lived in Alost, then changed his place of residence a few times before settling in the Molenbeek-Saint-Jean / Sint-Jans-Molenbeek district of Brussels in 2013 . In 2004 he got married. In 2007 the marriage was divorced again. He worked as a fitter in a telephone shop in Molenbeek. According to his neighbors, he repaired televisions part-time. At the time of the attack, however, he was unemployed.

In 2016, he came into the focus of the authorities for a drug offense, but not because of extremist (Islamist) connections or activities and was not on the list of possible threats. According to statements from his father and sister, Oussama Zariouh was not planning an attack, but planned to travel to Morocco in the summer and intended to buy a taxi and become a taxi driver. According to his Facebook page, which has not been updated since May 2016, a more nuanced picture emerges: On the one hand, he posted a series of harmless selfies showing him alone at the wheel of a vehicle, showed interest in charitable Islamic organizations and a weakness for Arab musicians and the Canadian singer Celine Dion . On the other hand, his Facebook presence also contains shared posts of killed Muslims from Syria, Palestine and Myanmar . He also seemed followers of Wahhabi preachers and Saudi Arabian r sheikhs as Mohamad al-Arefe or to have been Aid al-Qarni, both in numerous states as non grata Personae apply. The former had u. a. called for jihad in Syria. Among the people he seemed to prefer is Omar al-Haddouchi, one of Morocco's leading Salafist ministers, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the role he played in the May 16, 2003 attack in Casablanca .
