Nador ( Central Atlas Tamazight ⵏⴰⴹⵓⵕ Naḍuṛ , Arabic الناظور, DMG an-Nāẓūr ) with its approximately 165,000 inhabitants is the capital of the province of the same name in the Oriental region in northeastern Morocco . Nador is one of the fastest growing cities in Morocco.

location

Nador is located on the Mediterranean lagoon Mar Chica on the eastern edge of the Rif Mountains at heights of approx. 5 to 50 m and is known for its proximity to the Spanish enclave of Melilla, approx. 12 km to the north . The extinct volcanoes Jbel Sebt (Gurugú) and Jbel Tazoud (cf. Tazoudasaurus ) rise in the vicinity of the city . The climate is largely influenced by the Mediterranean Sea; Rain (approx. 315 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

traffic

Nador is easily accessible in terms of transport: there is an international airport ( IATA code NDR ) that also maintains connections to Germany, a railway line opened in 2009 ( Beni Ansar - Taourirt ) with a connection to the main Rabat - Oujda route and an international ferry port Connections to Almería and Sete. Road and motorway connections exist with Oujda (approx. 135 km south-east) and Guercif (approx. 135 km south-west). From there there are direct motorway connections to central Morocco ( Fès , Meknes ) and further to the metropolises on the Atlantic (Rabat, Casablanca , Tangier ).

economy

The economy of the city of Nador and its hinterland used to be mainly fishing and agriculture. In the last few decades light and heavy industry (steel production, metal processing etc.) and the construction industry (cement and stone factories etc.) have been added. In addition, jobs were created in the city administration and infrastructure. In the summer months, many Moroccan nationals from Nador who work in other European countries spend their holidays in their homeland.

The city's location, close to the sea and close to the Spanish exclave of Melilla, are catalysts for international trade. Today the smuggling of cheap goods from Melilla still plays a big role for the retailers from Nador and the surrounding area.

history
