The station Ostend is the largest railway station of Ostend and considering the ridership one of the busiest in Belgium and the main railway station on the Belgian coast. As railhead it is well timed and scheduled end of all incoming trains here. At the train station you can change to the city's bus network and the Kusttram .

location

The station building is located - at right angles to it - about 1000 meters from the northeast-southwest coastline, directly on the northeast and northern, so-called Voorhafen . The old town of Ostend is within walking distance to the northwest, only separated by the marina. The ferry port is also within walking distance.

history

In 1838, the Ostend-Stadt ( French : Ostend-Ville) train station was opened near the city center. The Ostend-Kai station was built later, this is located near the port and takes on the role of the main station in 1893. In 1950 the city station was closed and in 1956 it was demolished. The station building was built by the architects Otten et Franz Seulen between 1907 and 1913, it replaced a wooden structure from 1904. The architectural style represents the Belle Époque and is inspired by the work of the French architect Francois Mansart, classicism. In addition, the building has some details in the Louis XVI. - and Art Nouveau. Two square towers are to the left and right of the glass construction.

Ostend station was also the end of the 25-kilometer Ostend – Torhout railway line , which existed from 1864 to 1963. From Torhout there was a connection to other western and southern routes, over which international connections such as from Lille were offered.

The Hôtel Terminus Maritime was located in the station from its opening until the 1960s. The reception building is on the list of the Commission royale des monuments et des sites of the national monument protection authority. The station was an important transfer point from rail to ship, mainly to England .

From the end of 2011 to the beginning of 2019, construction work to better link the individual modes of transport took place. The project cost 150 million euros.

traffic

For decades, Ostend station served not only for domestic traffic to the North Sea coast, but also for switching between rail and ferry across the English Channel . It was the starting point for well-known international long-distance and luxury trains such as the Ostend-Vienna-Express , the Ostend-Cologne-Pullman-Express or the Tauern-Express and at times the Nord-Express . There were also direct connections to Istanbul , Athens , Stockholm and Bucharest via through coaches .

With the commissioning of the rail connection through the Eurotunnel without changing trains, Ostend station lost its importance as a ferry station in 1994. Since the Ostend train station has not been served by Thalys since April 1, 2015 , the train service has been limited to connections within Belgium.
