List of train stations in Belgium |
The station Namur ( French Gare de Namur ) is a station of the NMBS / SNCB in the Belgian city of Namur , the capital of the Walloon Region . In it the north-south railway line Brussels - Luxembourg (see railway line Brussels – Namur , railway line Namur – Luxembourg ) crosses with the "Walloon backbone" (dorsale wallonne) , the east-west railway line Liège - Lille . Measured by the number of passengers Monday to Friday, it is the ninth busiest station in Belgium and, after Ottignies, the busiest station in Wallonia.
history
The first station was put into operation on October 23, 1843 as the end point of the state railway line via Charleroi to Brussels . In 1850 the Compagnie du Nord-Belge line to Liège was added. In 1858 the Grande compagnie du Luxembourg opened the line to Arlon. In 1862 the Compagnie du Nord-Belge opened the line to Dinant . In 1869 the state railway line to Ramillies was added, which was gradually shut down beginning in the 1970s.
building
Today's second station building was inaugurated in 1864 according to plans by the architect M. Lambeau. Its facade is decorated with the coats of arms of Belgian cities, especially those that have a large train station or are on one of the routes to Namur. In 1883 there were two side extensions.
In 1990 a comprehensive modernization took place. The overpass to the tracks is now access to the Boulevard du Nord at the rear. The waiting room and counters were relocated across the tracks. There are also some shops there. Tracks 1 and 2 are now used for freight traffic, tracks 3 to 11 for passenger traffic.
The station extends with the reception building in an east-west direction. The long, narrow station forecourt with the station building and the tracks behind it forms the northern boundary of the city center.

International connections exist with the Intercity to Lille (France) and Luxembourg .
Domestic connections exist with various train types to Dinant , Herstal , Jambes , Tournai , Basse-Wavre , Charleroi , Ciney , Libramont , Löwen , Gembloux , Huy and Tamines .
