Ciney is a city and a municipality in the province of Namur in the Walloon part of Belgium .

The municipality consists of the districts of Ciney, Achêne, Braibant, Chevetogne, Conneux, Leignon, Pessoux, Serinchamps and Sovet .

economy

The local brewery with the varieties Ciney Blonde , Ciney Brune and Ciney Spéciale was taken over by the Alken-Maes brewery in 2000 .

Town twinning

A partnership with the French municipality of Semur-en-Auxois has existed since 1962 . There is also a partnership between the Leignon district and the French wine-growing town of Meursault .

Culture and sights

A private palace complex from the 19th century in neo-Renaissance style has housed the internationally known Benedictine Abbey of Chevetogne since 1939 . Another attraction in Ciney is the weekly cattle market, held every Friday. Whereupon up to 2500 head of cattle are raised.

Sports

The 8th stage of the Tour de France 1970 led over 233 km from Ciney to Felsberg in Saarland .

Events

Church Saint-Nicolas

On July 14, 2010, the roof of the tower of the old collegiate church of Ciney collapsed as a result of a severe storm . 180 houses were damaged.

The asteroid (3138) Ciney , discovered in 1980, has been named after the city since 1989.
