Catherine Fonck

Catherine Fonck (born September 22, 1968 in Ciney ) is a Belgian doctor and politician of the Center Démocrate Humaniste (cdH). Fonck has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2003 and was Minister of Health in the government of the French Community . From July to October 2014, she was Federal State Secretary for the Environment, Energy, Mobility and Institutional Reforms in the outgoing Di Rupo government . At the local level, she is a councilor in Frameries .

Life

Catherine Fonck studied medicine at the University of Namur (FUNDP) and the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and specializes in internal medicine and nephrology . From 1993 to 2004 she practiced in various Belgian clinics.

She made her entry into politics in 2003 when she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the cdH. Just one year later, she was elected Minister for Children, Youth Welfare and Health in the government of the French Community under Prime Minister Marie Arena ( PS ).

From 2009 she met again as parliamentary group leader of the cdH in the chamber. After the federal and regional elections on May 25, 2014, Deputy Prime Minister Joëlle Milquet (cdH) moved to the government of the French Community and thus triggered a chair move in the outgoing federal government under Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo (PS): during Melchior Wathelet (cdH) Milquet replaced as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Catherine Fonck replaced Wathelet. She therefore briefly held the office of State Secretary for the Environment, Energy, Mobility and Institutional Reforms.

At the local level, Fonck has been a council member in Frameries since 2006.
