history
Rochefort owes its name to a fortification ( rocha fortis ) that was built on a rock spur by the first lords of Rochefort, the Montaigu family . The castle and the place were the center of a seigneury , which was raised to a county by the Roman-German King Maximilian I in 1494 (see County Rochefort (Famenne) ). This was owned by the zu Stolberg family from 1544 before it came to the von Löwenstein-Wertheim family in 1574 .
