history
After King Henry II of France took the fortress of Mariembourg 11 km to the south in 1554, Maria of Hungary , sister of Emperor Charles V and governor of the Netherlands , fortified the town of Corbigny . The fortress was laid out from 1555 on the same principles as before Mariembourg, with star-shaped streets around a central square, and was named Philippeville after her nephew Philipp . The location on a hill in an otherwise flat area made the place suitable for fortification.
With the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659, France won the city - for more than a century and a half. After a visitation, Louis XIV had the fortifications improved by Vauban . With the Second Peace of Paris on November 20, 1815, it came to the newly founded United Kingdom of the Netherlands . Philippeville has belonged to this since the breakup of Belgium in 1830.
Below the city is a network of underground passages from the 17th century, which once connected the outer forts to the fortress. A section of these 10 km long corridors is open to the public.
