Elisabethszell is a parish village and part of the community Haibach in the Lower Bavarian district of Straubing-Bogen .

history

In 1346, a foundation established a provost's office for the Benedictine monastery in Oberalteich in what was then known as Atzenzell, which belonged to the parish of Haselbach, and existed, with interruptions, until the secularization of 1803.

In 1498 the Benedictines were expelled from Falkenfels Castle by the Paulsdorfer . Only the Countess von Schwarzenberg, who Elisabethszell had inherited from her ancestors, allowed the Oberalteich Monastery to buy back the property for a moderate sum in 1621. With this, the religious also returned to Elisabethszell.

The secularization of 1803 meant the end for the Elisabethszell provost. In 1805 Elisabethszell, which until then had been a branch of the Haselbach parish, was raised to the status of an independent parish. The state left the provost's apartment to the municipality of Elisabethszell to build a school. On July 11, 1877, the newly built parish church was consecrated by Bishop Ignatius of Senestrey .

The old cemetery was shut down in 1967 and turned into a parking lot in the early 1970s. The new cemetery was built above the rectory. With the territorial reform in Bavaria , the formerly independent municipality of Elisabethszell lost its independence and was incorporated into the municipality of Haibach on January 1, 1978.
