church

Saint John the Baptist

The church of St. John the Baptist, built from irregular granite blocks, is a branch church of the parish of Haibach. It has a Romanesque nave from around the 12th century and a baroque choir from the 17th century. The nave is flat, the tower is octagonal. Inside there is an interestingly decorated late Gothic pulpit and Gothic figures of Saints Bartholomew and Philip, both around 1400, as well as a Baroque figure of St. Andreas around 1650. The Way of the Cross consists of reverse glass paintings from the 18th century. Particularly noteworthy are the frescoes on the two nave walls from the 13th century. On the north-east wall there is a representation of the "Living Cross"; the fresco on the south-west wall probably represented the birth of Christ, but was largely destroyed by a window that was only let in during the baroque period.
