Surice

Surice is a village and a former municipality in the Belgian province of Namur .

The place has belonged to the municipality of Philippeville since the municipal reform of 1977 . It is located east of Philippeville and has 452 inhabitants (as of 2009).

During the First World War there was fighting between French and German troops in the Surice area . In retaliation for attacks on the German military, presumably by civilians from the locality of Surice, the village was surrounded by German units on August 25, 1914 and male villagers were shot. 56 Surice residents were killed and 132 houses burned down.

Buildings

In the village there is a village church that was built during the Renaissance , with the steeple going back to the 11th century.

Personalities

The German Colonel Rudolph Hammer (1862–1926) was wounded in the fighting for Surice during World War I.
