List of train stations in Belgium |
The Brussels-South train station ( French Gare de Bruxelles-Midi , Dutch Station Brussel-Zuid ) is the largest train station in Belgium . The station is located in the commune of Saint-Gilles / Sint-Gillis within the bilingual Brussels-Capital region , immediately south of the city of Brussels .
The station is particularly important for international train connections. Thalys , TGV and ICE trains run to France , the Netherlands and Germany ; there are two platforms in a separate area for Eurostar trains to London . The routes to London, Paris , Amsterdam and Cologne have all been developed for high-speed traffic.
With around 45,000 passengers boarding it, it is the second busiest train station in Belgium after Brussels Central .
history
Although a train station ( station des Bogards on Rouppeplatz) had existed in the south of Brussels since 1840 , the “new” south station designed by Auguste Payen was opened as a terminus in 1869 . The old station was demolished because it was already too small for the number of passengers. In 1949 this station, including the station building, was demolished and replaced by a new station system, which is now a through station on the north-south route through Brussels, which was opened in 1952 .
A terminal designed as a terminus was built within the western station building for the channel tunnel trains to London. A continuous connection beyond Brussels, for example to Amsterdam or Cologne, is not possible with this terminal.
