The Marseille-Saint-Charles train station is the main train station in the greater Marseille area . A first station building was opened on January 8, 1848, the current construction was not completed until a few years later. The terminus is located on a small hill near the city center.

The number of travelers has risen sharply in recent years: in 2000 it was 7.1 million passengers, in 2008 it was already 15.5 million. This is particularly due to the commissioning of the LGV Méditerranée high-speed line , which reduced the travel time from Paris to Marseille to three hours.

location

The station is at km 862.125 on the Paris – Marseille line and at km 444.084 on the Lyon – Marseille line . It is also the starting point of the Marseille – Ventimiglia and Marseille-Saint-Charles – Marseille-Joliette railway lines .

It has 16 platform tracks that are electrified with 1500 V direct current . There is a parking facility north of the train station.

history

The station building was built in 1848 in the form of a U encircling the tracks, there was one wing for arriving and one for departing passengers. These two wings were connected by a glass roof to form a station hall .

After the Second World War , the north wing was demolished in order to expand the station. The hall roof and the wall supporting it were preserved. At the end of the 1990s it was necessary to restructure the station. The project included the redesign of the bus station and the surrounding districts in connection with the commissioning of LGV Méditerranée . In June 2001 the redesigned station was put into operation, among other things the cross platform was completely renewed. On the north side, the new Honnorat hall was opened in 2007 , it has an area of 6400 m².

On October 1, 2017, a man born in Tunisia in 1987 killed two young women with a knife at the train station. The assassin was shot dead by security forces shortly afterwards.
