Station concourse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The station hall (also the station hall, platform hall, track hall or platform hall ) is a hall that covers the platforms and tracks of a train station and thus protects train users and station visitors from the effects of the weather. The counter hall or the waiting hall are often referred to as the station hall.

History and architecture

At the beginning of the history of the railway , wooden single halls were usually built next to the reception building (also the reception building ). These older halls were often made entirely of wood or of wood combined with iron. From the second half of the 19th century, however, larger groups of halls and multi-aisle station halls were used when renovating or building new stations with a large number of people, giving them a monumental effect. With the increasing size of the hall spans, cast-iron and steel constructions were used and a lot of glass is used today.

Medium-sized to large train stations in the industrialized nations are always covered and have a hall as a “shelter” for the trains and passengers. The reason for the mostly high height of the station halls is, on the one hand, the soot emissions of the steam locomotives, which used to be the main reason, and, on the other hand, practical factors: large rooms absorb noise better and are manageable. Another reason for large station halls is that they are representative buildings of a city.
