List of train stations in Thailand |
Hua Lamphong Station ( Thai สถานี รถไฟ หัวลำโพง , RTGS Sathani Rot Fai Hua Lamphong , pronunciation: [ sàʔtʰǎːniː rót faj hǔa lampʰoːŋ ]) is the main train station of Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . It is located downtown in the Pathum Wan district . Hua Lamphong is the central hub in the traffic route network of the Thai state railway .
history
The station Hua Lamphong is the second Central Station Bangkok. A memorial pillar commemorates the introduction of rail transport in Thailand in 1897 at the place where the former smaller station was located. The main station was built on the site of the central repair shop of the Thai State Railways , which moved to Makkasan in 1910 . Then the construction of the main station began, which was opened after six years of construction on August 16, 1916.
During the Second World War , the Allies tried in vain to destroy the main train station, but instead struck a nearby hotel.
On November 8, 1986, there was a serious accident in the train station. An unmanned locomotive train set off from a depot and drove over 15 km at around 50 km / h towards the station. There he ran over the buffer stop in the station hall and only came to a stop on the cross platform , killing five people and injuring another seven.
Reception building
The reception building was built in the style of the Italian Neo-Renaissance and comprises a roof structure made of steel and wood with stained glass windows . The architect was the Turin- born Italian Mario Tamagno , who, together with his compatriot Annibale Rigotti (1870–1968), was involved in numerous public construction projects in Bangkok at the beginning of the 20th century. The central, single-nave station concourse dominates the building .
Traffic significance
The Hua Lamphong station is the central hub in Thailand's railway network, which is mainly oriented towards Bangkok. All long-distance connections start or end here from this station.
Since 2004 the station has been connected to the Bangkok subway network.
New train station
In the future, the Hua Lamphong station will be replaced by a new Bang Sue Central Station , which is scheduled to open in January 2021. It will also replace the two train stations in the Bang Sue district (Khet) . With 26 tracks, it will be the largest train station in the ASEAN member states . In addition, long-distance passenger rail transport and local public transport will be linked. The entrance building of the Hua Lamphong train station will then continue to be used as a museum and tourist attraction.
