Ubon Ratchathani Railway Station
|
Ubon Ratchathani (in Thai อุบลราชธานี , mostly just called "Ubon", about the royal city of the lotus blossom ) is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Ubon Ratchathani and the province of Ubon Ratchathani . The province of Ubon Ratchathani is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the Isan .
geography
Ubon is located in the triangle of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia , about 480 kilometers northeast of the capital Bangkok . In the heart of the city flows the Maenam Mae Nam Mun (Mun River) , the largest river in the Isan and the city's most important water resource.
history
The area around Ubon was a long time by the Khmer ruled before the Ayutthaya Kingdom under Ramathibodi I. defeated the Khmer for a long time. After the destruction of Ayutthaya by the Burmese in 1767, other tribes also immigrated to Ubon, e. B. the Kha and the Suai. Twenty years later, King Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok ( Rama I ) encouraged the local leaders to combine the scattered settlements into a city that was easier to defend. Those who succeeded in doing so were awarded a title of nobility. In 1786, Thao Khamphong was able to report its first successes when he built a larger settlement on the Ban Chaeramae plain on Maenam Mun. It was the Ubon Ratchathani capital of the newly established province, but only later moved to its current location. In the meantime, the province was merged with Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) under King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) , but since 1933 it has been re-established as an independent administrative unit.

economy
Textile handicrafts and basketry (containers for sticky rice) are important branches of the economy. The state promotes the development of the regional economy with great financial expenditure. It is expected that the neighboring states of Cambodia and Laos will open up in the coming years and that Ubon will play an important role in the economic area of the tri-border region.
traffic
air traffic
The Ubon Ratchathani Airport is located close to the city center. It is used both civilly and militarily. During the Vietnam War it was an important base for the US Air Force . Now he serves in the Thai Air Force . It is also the second busiest passenger airport in the Isan region (12th in all of Thailand).
railroad
Ubon Ratchathani Railway Station has been in operation since 1930 . It is the end point of the Nakhon Ratchasima – Ubon Ratchathani railway , an extension of the northeast railway coming from Bangkok . However, the station is not in the city, but on the southern bank of the Mun , in Warin Chamrap . There are historical reasons for this: in 1930 it was too expensive to build a railway bridge over the river and it was not built later.
