Mouth of the Mun in the Mekong |
The Mae Nam Mun ( Thai : แม่น้ำ มูล , pronunciation: [mɛ̂ː náːm muːn] ), or just Mun , is a river in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan , and the largest inflow for the Mekong with an average of 725 m³ / s . Its catchment area extends over about 69,700 km² and is located in the provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima , Buri Ram , Roi Et , Surin , Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani . Numerous animal and plant species can be found here: more than 50 species of birds, more than 100 species of fish and 7 species of plants.
It rises in the San Kamphaeng Heights in Khao Yai National Park near Nakhon Ratchasima and then flows east through the southern part of the Isan ( Buri Ram ) until it flows into the Mekong after 673 kilometers at Khong Chiam in the Ubon Ratchathani province . The controversial Pak Mun Dam is also located near the confluence .
The main tributary of the Mun is the Mae Nam Chi , which joins the Mun in Kanthararom County in the Si Sa Ket Province .
Around the 7th century, a small empire called Canasapura developed on the upper reaches of the Mun . During the Vietnam War , the Mun was called the "Moon River" by the USAF soldiers stationed at Ubon Ratchathani Airfield because of its similar pronunciation.
