Paul Vergès (born March 5, 1925 in Ubon Ratchathani , Thailand , † November 12, 2016 in Réunion ) was a French politician ( PCR ). He was a member of the French National Assembly , Mayor of Le Port (Réunion) , Senator , Member of the European Parliament and President of the Regional Council of La Réunion .

Life

The son of a Frenchman from Réunion and a Vietnamese woman - brother of the lawyer and author Jacques Vergès - became involved in the political movement of his father, Raymond Vergès , the CRADS after the Second World War .

On May 25, 1946, at an election rally in St. Denis , his father's political opponent, Alexis de Villeneuve, Mayor of St. Benoit, was shot. Paul Verges was sentenced to five years imprisonment for negligent homicide, but no intent to kill has been proven. He was pardoned in 1953.

In 1956 he founded the Parti communiste réunionnais (Communist Réunions Party) and took over the party organ "Temoignages" founded by his father. From 1971 to 1989 he was mayor of the city of Le Port on the north-west coast of Réunion.

Vergès was active both as a local politician in the Conseil régional de La Réunion and internationally at EU level. He was also a member of the National Assembly of the Fourth and Fifth French Republic for a total of six years - from 1956 to 1958, from 1986 to 1987 and from 1993 to 1996. He was also a senator for eight years : he was elected to the Senate in 1996 and confirmed in 2001 until he finally reached the end of his tenure in 2006.

From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament . He had already held this mandate from 1984 to 1989.

From 1998 to 2010 he was President of the Regional Council (Conseil régional de La Réunion) on the French island of Réunion .
