The Bangkok Metro ( Thai รถไฟฟ้า มหานคร , pronunciation: [ rót faj- FA mahǎː nákʰɔːn ] - literally as: "all urban electric train" in short รถไฟฟ้า MRI pronunciation: [rót faj- FA em ʔaː Ti] , colloquially: รถไฟ ใต้ดิน , [ rót faj tâj din ] - "subway" or MRT ) is Bangkok's subway system. It was built by the Bangkok Metro Co. Ltd (BMCL) under the supervision of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). The Bangkok Metro, which opened in 2004, is the second mass transport system in the Thai capital after the Bangkok Skytrain . The Airport Rail Link has also been in place since 2010 .

So far there are two metro lines that are marked with the colors blue and purple. An expansion of the existing lines and a third, orange-colored line are under construction or planned.

Blue line

Construction of the first line, officially called Chaloem-Ratchamongkhon Line ("Celebration of Royal Patronage"), colloquially known as the Blue Line , began in 1999 . It is 22 kilometers long and has 19 stops currently located between Tao Poon and Hua Lamphong . You can change to the Skytrain in Si Lom / Saladaeng (at the intersection of Rama IV. And Silom Road ), Sukhumvit / Asok (at the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Soi 21 Asok) and Chatuchak / Mo Chit at the Chatuchak weekend market. The capacity per direction of travel is around 40,000 passengers per hour.

Due to multiple delays, the route was finally opened for a limited public test run on April 13, 2004. The official opening took place on July 3, 2004 at 7:19 pm by King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit . Passengers reported that the subway system was at full capacity within the next half hour.

On August 11, 2017, the line was extended by one station from the previous end point in Bang Sue to Tao Poon. There you can change to the purple line.

The northern extension from Tao Poon to Tha Phra was officially opened on March 30, 2020. A section with four stations to Sirindhorn was opened in free trial operation on December 4, 2019. The trains ran in trial operation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The trial operation was extended to Tha Phra in mid-February 2020 and could be used free of charge until the official opening day.

The southern extension from Hua Lamphong to Lak Song had been in trial operation up to Tha Phra since July 29, 2019. On August 24, 2019, the free trial operation was extended by two stations to Bang Wa. In the trial run, the stations were only used from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every 8 minutes. A change at Hua Lamphong station was also required. On September 29, 2019, the complete extension to Lak Song was officially opened.

vehicles

In order to keep the possibility open of operating routes together with the Bangkok Skytrain , the two vehicle types are very similar. The vehicles manufactured by Siemens AG in Austria drive automatically.

A three-car unit is 65.1 m long, 3.12 m wide and weighs 107.0 t when empty. The track width is 1435 mm ( standard gauge ). The trains draw 750 V direct current from the conductor rail and reach a maximum of 80 km / h. A unit consists of two railcars and a sidecar (wheel arrangement Bo'Bo '+ 2'2' + Bo'Bo '). The maximum starting acceleration is 1.3 m / s², the braking deceleration 1.0 m / s². One unit offers 126 seats and 760 standing places (6 people / m²), a total of 886 places. With a maximum permissible load (175.4 t), the maximum axle load is 15.4 t. There are four doors on each side of each car. The car floor is 1160 mm above the top of the rail.

New vehicles made in Japan (including the East Japan Railway Company and Toshiba ) are in use on the new purple line .

Incidents

On January 17, 2005, there was an accident in which at 9.30 a.m. during rush hour at the Thailand Cultural Center station, an empty train rolled backwards onto a train that was almost fully occupied with 700 passengers. 237 people were injured. After a two-week break, operations resumed on February 1st.
