The Chatuchak market covers an area of 1.13 square kilometers, which is used by more than 10,000 stalls and small shops. A park, Chatuchak Park, is also nearby and invites you to take a breather. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 300,000 visitors come every day, with most stalls and shops only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

The offer ranges from clothing, food, household items and furniture, antiques and antiquarian books and magazines, Thai handicrafts to devotional objects and live animals.

history

The Chatuchak market owes its existence to an idea of the former Thai Prime Minister Plaek Phibulsongkhram (1938–1944, 1948–1957), who wanted to set up a flea market in every city in the country . In Bangkok in 1948 the first such flea market was set up as a so-called "weekend market" on Sanam Luang .

In the early 1980s, the government decreed that the Sanam Luang should be converted into a public park for the citizens of Bangkok and serve as the central venue for the 200th anniversary of the Rattanakosin era in 1982. So it was decided to move the flea market in the Phahonyothin district to the site of the golf course of the Thai railway company. It was later named after the nearby Chatuchak Park and gave the later designated district ( Khet ) Chatuchak its name.
