The Skytrain ( Thai : รถไฟฟ้า - บี ที เอ ส , pronunciation: [ rót fajfáː biːtʰiːʔèːt ]) is part of Bangkok's public transport system . It is operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit System ( BTS ). The Skytrain runs separately from the Bangkok Metro , the subway of Bangkok. The Skytrain routes are around 57 kilometers long and run continuously on stilts.

history

Network map of the Bangkok Skytrain, the Bangkok Metro and the Suvarnabhumi Airport Link (as of December 2019)

Originally the system was planned with the same technology as the Vancouver SkyTrain , but this was abandoned in 1992 after political interference. This first Skytrain project is sometimes referred to as the Lavalin Skytrain for better distinction from the current project . The second project was based on Siemens technology, but apart from the name “Skytrain” it has nothing in common with the first project: not only the technology, but also the lines are different. Its two lines - the Silom Line and the Sukhumvit Line - opened on December 5, 1999.

The foundations for the Lavalin Skytrain were laid on two bridges over the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ) when they were built in the early 1990s. The foundation at the Taksin Bridge has meanwhile been used to extend the Silom Line over the river to Thonburi . The completion of this extension was originally planned for 2005, but the construction work was interrupted due to political interference. The new section was opened on May 15, 2009.

The extension of the Sukhumvit Line to the southeast began in October 2006 and was inaugurated on August 12, 2011. Other extensions of the lines are under construction. To connect the new airport , however, the Skytrain was not extended, but a new railway line ( Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link ) was built that does not correspond to BTS technology. At Phaya Thai station there is a possibility to change to the Airport Rail Link.

There are five stops where you can change to the "Blue Line" of the Bangkok Metro .
