history
The city of Nonthaburi has existed since the 16th century, when the place Talat Khwan was elevated to a city. Under King Prasat Thong a canal was dug, which was an abbreviation of the Chao Phraya and which the river took as a new river bed and still takes today. King Narai had a fortress built here in 1665, as the new course of the Chao Phraya shortened the way to the then capital Ayutthaya . The city of Nonthaburi was then settled near the fortress.
From 1943 to 1946 the province was part of Bangkok. As part of the industrialization and rapid growth of Bangkok, the eastern part of the Nonthaburi province has been almost completely urbanized since the 1980s and has grown together with the metropolis without its borders being recognizable. Numerous companies have settled in Nonthaburi province instead of Bangkok due to a lack of space. The population has also grown rapidly. The urban population increased from 30,900 in 1980 to 232,800 in 1990 and to 522,700 in 2000.
