Amnat Charoen ( Thai : อำนาจเจริญ , pronunciation: [ am.nâːt t͡ɕa.rɤːn ]) is a province ( Changwat ) in the northeast region of Thailand , Isaan . The capital of the province is also called Amnat Charoen .

geography

The province of Amnat Charoen is located about 600 kilometers northeast of the capital Bangkok on the border with Laos .

The province lies on the Mekong , which also forms the border with Laos. Two smaller rivers, the Lam Sae Bok and the Lam Sae Bai, provide smaller water sources for the province's agriculture.

climate

The climate is tropical - monsoonal with heavy rains from July to September and with drought from November to March. During the hot season there is sometimes 40 ° C in the shade, in winter the temperatures can drop to 12 ° C at night. In the rainy season, the parched land is often flooded.

Economy and Importance

The province is one of the poorest in Thailand, the sandy and dry soil leads to major floods in the rainy season, but in dry years the yields drop sharply. Rice, cotton , jute , silk , freshwater fish, cattle and pigs are the main products. Tourism is practically non-existent due to its location away from the major tourist centers.

In 2011, the "Gross Provincial Product" (was GDP ) of the province 12.099 billion baht (300 million euros). This corresponds to 30,231 baht per capita (approx. 740 euros), which is less than a fifth of the national average. This makes Amnat Charoen the economically weakest province in Thailand. The minimum wage in the province is 163 baht per day (around € 4).

history

Amnat Charoen only became an independent province on January 12, 1993, before that it was part of the Ubon Ratchathani Province . It was therefore, along with Nong Bua Lamphu and Sa Kaeo , one of the three youngest provinces in the country until the creation of Bueng Kan Province in 2011.

Coat of arms and motto

In the center of the coat of arms is the image of the Buddha Phra Mongkhon Ming Mueang, also known as Buddha Yai (Big Buddha). It is a highly venerated statue about 20 m high in the middle of the provincial capital Amnat Charoen . At the left and right edge there is a tree with an elephant lying at its feet.
