history

The area was inhabited more than 6,000 years ago and gave birth to the first Bronze Age culture in Southeast Asia , if not worldwide, as the finds at Ban Chiang show. Udon was later part of the old Dvaravati Empire . The area has belonged to the Khmer Empire since the 9th century . Ramkhamhaeng finally expanded his kingdom Sukhothai at the expense of the Khmer and took udon among other things. In 1817 the Thai Phuan came from Laos and settled in Ban Chiang.

In the 1960s, the stationing of American soldiers for the Vietnam War brought an economic boom. One of the largest airfields in the country and an extensive red light district were created. What is left is a relatively well-developed transport system.
