The Udon Thani airport ( Thai ท่าอากาศยาน นานาชาติ อุดรธานี ; IATA code : UTH ; ICAO code : VTUD ) just outside the city Udon Thani in Udon Thani province is the main airport in northeast Thailand .
General
It has a partly asphalt and partly concrete runway with a length of 3,048 meters. Terminal 2 with its passenger boarding bridge was opened in 2006.
With 2.21 million passengers per year (as of 2015), Udon Thani is the most frequented airport in the northeast region (Isan) and seventh in all of Thailand. The number of passengers tripled between 2009 and 2015.

history
For decades, the CIA's Air America airline operated its aviation hub and headquarters for Asia. During the Vietnam War , the airport was used by the United States Air Force ( Pacific Air Forces ) from 1964 to 1975 under the name "Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base" . There was also an AFTN broadcasting studio here .
On February 8, 2006 there was an international group skydiving with participants from 31 countries under the name “the World Team”. Here the world record for the largest free fall in formation jumping of 400 people over the airport of Udon Thani was set.
Armed forces
A military base of the Thai Air Force is also located here . The Royal Thai Air Force maintains the "Wing 23, 2nd Air Division Air Combat Command" here. 19 Alpha Jet A are stationed at this base . These were bought cheaply in 1999 by the German Air Force .
