Madison Washington instigated a revolt on the slave ship Creole in 1841.

Washington served as the ship's cook while he was shipped from Virginia to New Orleans along with 134 other slaves . He incited 18 of his fellow prisoners to rebellion . They took control of the Creole and sailed to the British- controlled island of Nassau . Despite American protests, the British did not send the slaves back, but eventually released them. Before that, however, they imprisoned Washington and its accomplices for a few months for mutiny .

Madison Washington was the namesake for the hero in Frederick Douglass ' novel, The Heroic Slave .
