After the Lao population was increasingly relocated to the south of today's Laos due to the constant Burmese attacks, the importance of Nong Khai also grew, especially when the new capital Viang Chan (Vientiane) was built on the other bank of the Mekong in the 16th century . But even there one was not safe from the Burmese, and so Laotians fled in several waves in the following centuries to the south and north-east Thailand ( Isan ) , where they make up a significant proportion of the population.
