About this picture

Ayutthaya (full name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya , Thai พระนครศรีอยุธยา , [ pʰráʔ náʔkʰɔ̄ːn sǐ ʔājúttʰājāː ]) is a province ( Changwat ) in the central region of Thailand . The provincial capital Ayutthaya is located in the center of the province, about 70 kilometers north of today's capital Bangkok .

The name Ayutthaya is derived from the city of Ayodhya , the hometown of the divine Prince Rama in the Indian Ramayana epic.

Ayutthaya lies in the middle of the fertile plain of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ). Together with the two other rivers Mae Nam Lop Buri and Mae Nam Pa Sak, it makes the province the main growing area for rice .

history

Ayutthaya had been the capital of the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya from around the middle of the 14th century until it was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767. This period in Thai history is called the Ayutthaya period . The capital was then moved to what is now Bangkok . A new, much smaller city of Ayutthaya was built just east of the remains of the old metropolis.

The province of Ayutthaya was initially called Krung Kao ( กรุง เก่า , "old (capital) city"). After the Thesaphiban administrative reform of King Rama V (Chulalongkorn) in the 1890s, it was the seat of Monthon Krung Kao , which included the provinces of Krung Kao, Ang Thong , Saraburi , Phra Phutthabat , Lop Buri , Phrom Buri , In Buri and Sing Buri were combined. In 1919 the name of the province was changed to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya , in 1926 the Monthon was also renamed Ayutthaya . After the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932 , the monthons were abolished and all provinces were placed directly under the central government. In 1976 the ruins of the old metropolis were protected as Ayutthaya Historical Park , which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 .
