Amphoe Uthai ( Thai : อำเภอ อุทัย , pronunciation: ʔāmpʰɤ̄ː ʔù.tʰāj ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the eastern part of Ayutthaya Province ("Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province"). Ayutthaya Province is located in the central region of Thailand .

Neighboring counties (clockwise from the north): Amphoe Nakhon Luang and Phachi in the province of Ayutthaya, Amphoe Nong Khae in the province of Saraburi and the Amphoe Wang Noi , Bang Pa-in and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya in turn from the province of Ayutthaya.
history
In the past this county was initially called Uthai Yai, but was renamed Uthai in 1916.
Before the Kingdom of Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, Phraya Wachira Prakan (later King Taksin ) led a small group of soldiers on a campaign against the Burmese in the east. He was able to get past the Burmese troops undisturbed to the area of today's Uthai. Since he arrived here in the morning, he named the area Uthai , which means rising sun .
