The Phu Phan mountain range ( Thai เทือกเขา ภู พาน , [ tʰʉ̂ak-kʰǎo pʰuː-pʰaːn ], English: Phu Phan Range ) is a low mountain range that divides the Khorat plateau in Isaan (northeast Thailand ) into two basins: the northern one Sakhon Nakhon Basin and the Southern Khorat Basin.

The hills extend to the provinces of Nongbua Lamphu , Khon Kaen , Udon Thani , Sakon Nakhon , Nakhon Phanom , Kalasin and Mukdahan .

The name refers to the characteristic table mountain shape of most of the peaks: phu is the word for "mountain" in the Isaan / Lao language (in contrast to khao in central / southern Thailand and doi in northern Thailand), while phan is a kind of base or also means tray. The highest peaks of the chain reach a height of about 630 meters.

The Phu Phan Palace , a former royal residence, is located in the mountains near Sakhon Nakhon .

There are four national parks in the area of the Phu Phan ridge:

The inland lake Nong Han - a large lake on the northern outskirts of Sakon Nakhon  - and the almost 1000 year old ruins of the Khmer temple of Phu Phek can also be found here.

After the Communist Party of Thailand (KPT) decided under Maoist influence in 1961 its "rural strategy", that is, tried to encircle the cities from the countryside and devoted itself to armed struggle, it moved its headquarters to the jungle of the Phu Phan Mountains. The peasant leader Khrong Chandawong had previously been executed here. In 1966 the radical intellectual Jit Phumisak , who had joined the KPT, was shot in the Phu Phan Mountains ( Amphoe Waritchaphum , Sakon Nakhon ).
