Sakon Nakhon ( Thai : สกลนคร , also: Sakon Nakhorn, earlier: Nong Han Luang) is a city ( เทศบาล นคร สกลนคร ) in the Thai province of Sakon Nakhon . It is the capital of Sakon Nakhon Province.
Sakon Nakhon is the social, political and economic center within a region of several hundred square kilometers, the city itself has 53,763 inhabitants (as of 2013).
origin of the name
Sakon comes from the Sanskrit sakala ( Devanagari : सकल ) and means whole, all-embracing, and Nakhon comes from the Sanskrit nagara (Devanagari: नगर ) meaning city. In a figurative sense, Sakon Nakhon means city of cities.
geography
The province of Sakon Nakhon is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan . It takes up the area of the subdistrict ( tambon ) That Choeng Chum ( ธาตุ เชิง ชุม ) and is about 650 kilometers away from the capital Bangkok . It is located on the edge of the Mekong Plain , south and west of the city is a wooded mountain landscape. Sakon Nakhon is located on Nong Han Lake , the largest natural lake in northeast Thailand with an area of 125.2 km².

Educational institutions
There are two universities in or near Sakon Nakhon: the Rajabhat University of Sakon Nakhon (about 6 kilometers outside the city center) and the Chaloem Phra Kiat Campus Sakon Nakhon of the Kasetsart University (about 20 kilometers north of the city).

In Sakon Nakhon is the mission station and the seat of the diocesan administration of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Thare and Nonseng . Their main church, the Archangel Michael Cathedral, is in the small town of Tha Rae ( ท่า แร่ ) on the opposite side of Lake Nong Han, hence the name.

- The Wat Phra That Choeng Chum - a white, 24 meter high that (the Laotian equivalent of the Thai chedi ) above an old chedi from the 16th century that can still be seen inside .
- The large lake Nong Han in the north of the city with a recreation park (Chaloem Phra Kiat Park) and a small harbor; Kasetsart University operates a center for the breeding and research of aquatic plants, whose lotus and water lily ponds can also be visited by visitors; on the western bank lies the dilapidated That Dum, a temple from the Khmer period.
