The Wat Phra That Choeng Chum Worawihan ( Thai : วัด พระ ธาตุ เชิง ชุม วรวิหาร ) is a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) in Sakon Nakhon , Sakon Nakhon Province in Thailand . It has the status of a royal second class temple and is assigned to the Mahanikai .

Wat Phra That Choeng Chum is the symbol of Sakon Nakhon Province and is depicted in its seal . The temple is also shown on the reverse of the Thai 10 Satang coin, which is hardly in circulation due to its low value.

location

Wat Phra That Choeng Chum is in the city of Sakon Nakhon, Thanon Rueang Sawat, in the far northeast of Thailand.

Building history

Wat Phra That Choeng Chum was built after the Khmer were expelled from what is now Thailand. Before that there was a sanctuary of the Khmer from Angkor at this place .

  • The rectangular Phra That Choeng Chum ( that is the Laotian equivalent of a chedi or stupa ), which with its height of 24 meters can be seen from afar and was built in the 17th century in the Laotian style; it includes a much older prang from the Khmer period (10th century); the chedi is built over the alleged footprints of the four incarnations of the Buddha and is very much venerated by the believers in the region
  • The remarkable Buddha statue Luang Phor Phra Ong Saen , which is in the Chiang Saen style. It is said to date from 1257.
  • Spherical landmarks for the bot ( luk nimit ) that resemble cannon balls are exhibited on the spacious grounds.
