The Yellow Flame tree ( Peltophorum pterocarpum ) is a plant species in the subfamily caesalpinioideae (Caesalpinioideae) within the family of legumes (Fabaceae). It is mainly found in Southeast Asia.
description
The yellow flame tree is a tree that reaches heights of 12 to 24 meters and a crown diameter of up to 8 meters. The bark is smooth and gray. The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 15 to 30 cm long. The leaf blade is pinnate in pairs with six to twenty pinnate of the first order. There are 20 to 30 pairs of leaflets on each of the first-order leaflets. The shiny green leaflets are oval and notched at the top.
The flowering period extends from March to June. The strongly fragrant flowers are arranged in paniculate inflorescences . The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . The wavy sepals are rust-red. The light yellow petals are hairy at their base and often wrinkled at the edge. The ten stamens are densely hairy at their base. The anthers are golden yellow. The stylus is long and thread-shaped.
The flat, hard, oval legumes are rust-red. They taper at both ends and are between 5 and 10 cm long and about 2.5 cm wide. The seeds are brown.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.
distribution
Peltophorum pterocarpum is widespread in Southeast Asia from Sri Lanka to northern Australia ; there is also a large deposit on the Andaman Islands . In many tropical countries it is a neophyte , for example in Florida .

The first publication took place under the name ( Basionym ) Inga pterocarpa by Augustin Pyrame de Candolle . The new combination to Peltophorum pterocarpum (DC.) Backer ex K. Heyne was published by Cornelis Andries Backer in Karel Heyne . Other synonyms for Peltophorum pterocarpum (DC.) Backer ex K. Heyne are: Baryxylum inerme (Roxb.) Pierre , Caesalpinia ferruginea Decne. , Caesalpinia inermis Roxb. , Peltophorum ferrugineum (Decne.) Benth. , Peltophorum inerme (Roxb.) Náves ex Fern.-Vill. nom. inval.
use
The yellow flame tree is used as an ornamental plant in parks in tropical countries . The finely grained wood is popular for fine furniture work.
